Ready to Avoid the Hurt Locker
U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Weber (right), an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician, helps Staff Sgt. Amber Goedde, an EOD technician with the 23rd Civil Engineer Squadron, don a bomb suit at Forward Operating Base Azizullah, Afghanistan.
Weber is with the 11th Civil Engineer Squadron. Both EOD techs are deployed to the 466th Air Expeditionary Squadron, based out of Kandahar Airfield.
Goedde donned the 85-pound a bomb suit for an operations check to maintain the suit’s proper functionality. The suit is worn when EOD technicians have to investigate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) up close.
The EOD techs also use small, ground robots to investigate suspected bombs when conditions determine they need to keep a greater distance between themselves and the potential IED.
