Sailors aboard a U.S. Navy riverine patrol boat assigned to Riverine Squadron (RIVRON) 3, Detachment 1, conduct a live fire exercise on a a river in Matuntugo, Columbia. RIVRON-3 took part in Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station 2012, an annual deployment of U.S. military training teams to U.S. Southern Command‘s area of responsibility. Colombian marines and U.S. Marines assigned to the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) also participated in the exercise.

The sailors are part of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC), which is headquartered at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia.

This vessel in the photo is called a  Riverine Patrol Boat, the Navy’s version of the Small Unit Riverine Craft. If you click on the photo to enlarge the image, you will get a good look at the electric-powered Gatling gun in the bow and the M-2 .50-caliber machine gun in the stern.
