Stay Low!

(U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Michael J. MacLeod, Task Force 1/82 Public Affairs Office)

An Afghan soldier runs past a U.S. Army paratrooper during a firefight with insurgent forces near Joint Security Station Hasan, which is close to the village of Spedar in southern Afghanistan’s Ghazni province.

The American soldier, from the 82nd Airborne Division, is armed with an M249 squad automatic weapon. The Afghan soldier is carrying some sort of automatic battle rifle, probably a Kalishnikov.

It was really hard to pick a photo from the Defense Department slideshow that exhibited the above photo. The photo below shows just how bucolic the landscape in this area of Afghanistan is — until the shooting starts. The photo shows U.S. paratroopers and Afghan soldiers heading toward Spedar.
