A coalition force member teaches children how to count to 10 during a patrol in Farah province, Afghanistan. Judging by the beard, helmet shape and lack of identifying shoulder patches, we’re betting the soldier in this photo is in Special Operations.

The boy in the photo seems oblivious to the garland of grenades hanging from the roof of the all terrain vehicle (ATV), the machine gun mounted on the passenger side and the 9 mm pistol on the special operator’s hip. At a Special Operations conference 4GWAR attended last week, one of the things we were told is this is what war does to children. They grow up with violence and violent tools as a part of their everyday life.
