Coast Guard medevacs ill fisherman

(U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 1st Class Seth Johnson)

For all they do, we don’t run nearly enough photos of the U.S. Coast Guard in action, so here’s one.

An MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew hoisted an ill fisherman from the deck of the Coast Guard Cutter Willow about 60 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey on January 11, 2018.

Willow, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender based in Newport, Rhode Island, was directed by Coast Guard officials to the fishing boat Illusion and took the man aboard for transfer to the helicopter.

An MH-65 Dolphin brought the patient to Atlanticare Regional Medical facility in Pomona, New Jersey, according to a Coast Guard press statement.  To see a brief video of the medevac operation click here.

We’re beginning to think that one just can’t take a bad photo of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji.

Here an Air Force C-130J Super Hercules flies near Japan’s tallest mountain during a routine sortie out of Yokota Air Base, Japan, Jan. 12, 2018. The aircraft is assigned to the 36th Airlift Squadron.

Eyes in the Sky: Afghan Air assists ANDSF offensive maneuver during Maiwand 10

(U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sergeant Justin T. Updegraff)

In case you forgot, there’s still a shooting war going on in Afghanistan, although U.S. troops are deployed largely in advisory and support roles.

As a reminder, here we see U.S. soldiers firing an 81 mm mortar to support Afghan soldiers during Operation Maiwand 10 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 26, 2017. The U.S. soldiers — assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment — fired multiple illumination rounds to light the nearby area of Marjah, in southern Afghanistan, where Afghan soldiers encountered a nighttime ambush.

(Air National Guard photo by Staff Sergeant Nieko Carzis)

A California Air National Guard C-130J Hercules drops fire retardant over the hills above Santa Barbara, California on December 13, 2017. The aircraft, helping fight the fatal Thomas Fire, is assigned to the 146th Airlift Wing.

A 32-year-old firefighter, Cory Iverson, lost his life Thursday (December 14) battling the Thomas Fire, the largest of the blazes plaguing southern California. Iverson, who had been a firefighter with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection — also known as Cal Fire — since 2009, was a fire apparatus engineer from San Diego, according to a Cal Fire spokeswoman, CNN reported.
