Uniform Tour.

(All Defense Department photos by Lisa Ferdinando)

This week we thought we would return to a thing we haven’t done for a while: A look at honor guard uniforms in countries where the Secretary of Defense is visiting. We haven’t done it for Mark Esper, who, because of the coronavirus pandemic, hasn’t been traveling much outside the United States.

But recently he made the rounds of North Africa and the Mediterranean and here are some of the uniforms that Defense Department staff photographed.

The first one (above) is from the island nation of Malta. You can see the influence of the British Empire in the garb of these two very tall guards.

Next up is Morocco, a former French colony in North Africa, now ruled by a king.

The uniforms still showed European influence, if a little more formal with epaulets, in Rabat, Morocco where Esper met with General Abdelfattah Louarak at the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces Headquarters.

Then there was Tunisia.

Lots of different uniforms were on display in a welcome ceremony with Tunisian Defense Minister Ibraham Bartagi in Tunis.

Here’s another look at those caped, saber brandishing, red clad honor guards.

And then there are the U.S. Marines in their dress blues meeting with the Defense Secretary at the North African American Cemetery and Memorial in Carthage, Tunisia.

Molto Impressionante!

U.S. Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, walks with his Italian counterpart Admiral Luigi Binelli-Mantelli during a pass and review ceremony in Rome on January 19.

Make sure you click on the photo to enlarge the image and get a good look at the spectacular uniforms of this Italian honor guard: red and white ostrich feather plumes, Napoleonic hats, white gloves, sashes and gaiters, shakos, capes, boots and lances! The general and the admiral aren’t doing too badly themselves in the brass and gold braid department.

Dempsey stopped in Italy to meet with Binelli-Mantelli and Minister of Defense Roberta Pinotti on his way to NATO meetings in Brussels. Fighting terrorism and countering Russia’s aggressive behavior in Ukraine were key topics of discussion.

Italy has made major contributions to NATO and United Nations international missions, Dempsey said. Thousands of Italian troops are currently deployed in Iraq, Kosovo, the Horn of Africa, and with the United Nations mission in Lebanon. Italy and the United States are the top contributors of on-the-ground trainers and advisors with the Kurds and Iraqis in the fight against ISIS/ISIL/IS extremists, defense officials noted.

Mongolian Salute

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has been on a whirlwind trip across Asia recently, stopping in Beijing, Tokyo and Ulaanbaatar (that’s the capital of Mongolia).

Hagel, a former Army infantryman, reviewed an honor guard — as is customary for visiting dignitaries. He then stood and watched the honor guard present arms and then yell — which apparently is also customary in Mongolia.

We’ve seen some unusual dress uniforms in Defense Department photos over the last few years, but these Mongolian soldiers may take the cake. Note the spiffy spiked helmet and pointy-toed boots. But check out the stocks on some of those rifles!

Apparently another Mongolian custom is to give visiting distinguished guests a horse as a present. To see the cute pony Hagel got — and what he named it, click here.

Honor Guard Review

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have had a busy travel year — visiting allies, U.S. troops in the field and attending various security conferences. Almost everywhere they go, the top civilian and uniformed leaders of the Pentagon are met by an honor guard.

As longtime 4GWAR readers know, your editor finds the exotic uniforms some of these honor guards wear absolutely fascinating.

So here’s a sampling of some of the places Hagel and Dempsey have been and what the reception committee looked like. Click on each photo to enlarge the image.

In late April, Dempsey visited Beijing and reviewed the troops with Gen. Fang Fenghui, chief of the Chinese general staff.
